Why are my lenses weaker than my spectacles?

There are a multitude of differing reasons as to why there is little difference between lenses and glasses. Should one's sight have been corrected against astigmatism, they can almost never retain the same strength. In addition, if one is affected by significant long- or short-sightedness then sight capacity will vary because the glass rests some distance from the eye in contrast to the lense which sits on the eye.
